Producers of metals and other raw materials rose after strong Chinese manufacturing data.

Profits earned by big industrial companies in China jumped in November, official data showed, thanks to a low comparison base last year and recent fiscal stimulus measures.

Copper futures rose sharply in the wake of the data from the largest market for industrial metals. Copper was set to finish 2023 flat after volatile swings driven by fears about Chinese recession and shifting views of the global central-bank policy outlook.

Waste from a furnace hit flammable material in a Chinese nickel mine in Indonesia, resulting in the deaths of at least 19 workers and injuring dozens more as hot steam hissed out and fire ripped through the building.
