Producers of metals and other raw materials rose as the dollar gave back some of its summer gains ahead of inflation data.

Precious metals, which are particularly sensitive to foreign-exchange moves, rallied. Silver futures rose almost 6%, and gold futures settled at a two-week high.

Copper miner Antofagasta said works on the Los Pelambres desalination plant project in Chile were paused as a precautionary measure after sea swells overturned a construction platform on Aug. 15.
