Stocks in Toronto were lower mid-trading Wednesday after floating above Tuesday's close for the first half of the morning. Canada's transportation and consumer services sectors were leading the few gainers of the session, while materials, utilities and energy were posting the largest declines.

Canada's S&P/TSX Composite Index was 0.43% lower at midday, reaching 20497.65 while the blue-chip S&P/TSX 60 edged lower by 0.32% to 1237.66.

Boyd Group Services shares rose by 4.4% to C$237.43 ($177.39) after the company reported better-than-expected profit and revenue in the first quarter.


Other market movers:

Ballard Power Systems fell 4.6% to C$5.62 after it said its net loss narrowed while revenue declined more than analysts predicted in the first quarter.

IA Financial shares were 6.3% lower at C$83.62 despite reporting a swing-to-a-profit in the first quarter while return on equity to shareholders rose from the previous quarter. IA Financial also said its board of directors has declared a 13% increase to its dividend.

GBLT shares jumped 20% to C$0.12 after it said it received an order for battery products from a drugstore chain in Europe worth $4.7 million.
