Producers of metals and other raw materials rose amid deal activity.

Shares of PolyMet Mining more than doubled after the part-owner of a Minnesota copper mine received an offer from larger rival Glencore to buy the stake in PolyMet it doesn't already own for $2.11 a share.

Botswana will increase its take of the diamonds De Beers mines there from 25% to 50% in 10 years' time, part of a deal that extends the company's relationship with the country while loosening its hold on its output there.

Shares of Luxembourg steelmaker Ternium rose after analysts at brokerage Morgan Stanley endorsed its plan to pursue growth opportunities in Brazil.

"Management is optimistic about Brazil in the medium-term, as they expect the manufacturing sector there to grow, as happened in Mexico 10 years ago," said analysts at brokerage Morgan Stanley, in a note to clients.

"In Brazil, apparent consumption of steel per inhabitant is among the lowest across the Americas and the world."
