"I pray, I hope that we can all leave this place today even more committed to work together and create a brighter, a better, a wiser, more compassionate global narrative free of antisemitism. We shall not rest peacefully until all our hostages are free from their captivity. (APPLAUSE) And we promise - young, middle and old alike - to carry the torch of memory on behalf of all those who no longer have voice."

This year's ceremony was overshadowed by the events last year when 1,200 people were killed in a Hamas-led rampage through Israeli towns and 253 hostages were taken, according to Israeli tallies.

Between 1941 and 1945, Nazi Germany and its collaborators systematically murdered some six million Jews across German-occupied Europe.
