ABN AMRO has launched a Product-as-a-Service (PaaS) desk that companies can approach for advice and (growth) financing.

In Product-as-a-Service business models, customers pay to use a product, on either a per-use or a subscription basis. Examples are bicycle or car sharing companies, or firms where customers can order a mattress or even a lift and pay for use only.

PaaS business models increase circularity

This is a different, relatively new way of doing business. In many cases, PaaS leads to more efficient use of raw materials, making it an environmentally friendly alternative that increases circularity. The announcement of this new desk, timed to coincide with Circular Economy Week, is part of ABN AMRO's ambition to be a frontrunner in the transition to a circular economy. ABN AMRO has been active in the PaaS market for some years now and has built up a loan portfolio among these clients of over 100 million euros. The new PaaS desk is one of the bank's steps towards further growth in this market.

Different forms of financing

In PaaS business models, the ownership of products is not transferred to the user as it often is in traditional business models. Cash flows and legal documentation are also different. This calls for different forms of financing and advice - which ABN AMRO can provide. The PaaS desk's expert staff know all the ins and outs, and they are happy to answer questions and assist with loan applications.

NautaDutilh provides legal advice

Thanks to its collaboration with law firm NautaDutilh, ABN AMRO's PaaS desk can also offer businesses legal advice on their PaaS contracts. After all, the better the quality of these contracts is, the easier it is for companies to obtain ABN AMRO financing. As such, NautaDutilh also contributes to the further growth of PaaS businesses. Early September, the desk's success will be evaluated.
