Actuate Corporation (NASDAQ:BIRT), The people behind BIRT® and the leader in open source Business Intelligence (BI), today announced it has been named a Top Work Place in the Bay Area by the San Jose Mercury News and Workplace Dynamics' list of Top Work Places in 2012. Actuate made the list in the employee-based survey of Bay Area companies.

The employee survey, conducted by independent company, Workplace Dynamics, was spotlighted in the June 17th edition of the San Jose Mercury News and other Bay Area News Group publications, including the Contra Costa Times, Oakland Tribune and San Mateo County Times. The results of the survey appear in the Jobs, Careers & Education section of the Sunday newspapers that are part of the Bay Area News Group and are online at http://www.mercurynews.com/jobs.

Actuate, founded in 1993, was selected in the midsize category. Its focus fostering an innovative, employee-centric culture led the 19-year-old company to a groundbreaking reinvention in 2004, when leadership realized the potential of open source. At a time when other leading software makers were still creating burdened, proprietary and difficult to use BI software with huge buy-in costs, Actuate proposed, sponsored and continues to lead the project and code for open source BIRT (Business Intelligence Reporting Tools). Today, BIRT is the most widely adopted open source BI and reporting technology.

"We made a bold move to differentiate ourselves from the rest of the pack and it's paying off today. We have created an environment where employees can contribute new ideas and bring them to fruition - we thank them for their confidence in naming us a Top Work Place," said Pete Cittadini, CEO and President, Actuate. "Along with our commitment to technology innovation, we make it a priority to invest in our employees. We celebrate every success and nurture the potential of every person. We keep the best interests of our employees at the forefront of every conversation."

Unparalleled innovation makes Actuate an exciting place to learn, but also a true family. Julie Jacobs, 13 year Actuate employee and Director of Human Resources said: "We call ourselves the Actuate Family. Because we have above-average lengths of employment, we've seen employee's families grow and we grieved over losses of colleagues. But as families do, we heal and come back together and we move forward to celebrate Actuate's future."

The rankings in the Top Work Places are based on survey information collected by Workplace Dynamics, a company specializing in employee engagement and retention. Ten large companies were ranked, 20 midsize companies were ranked, and 35 small companies were ranked after employees submitted surveys. Rankings were composite scores calculated purely on the basis of employee responses about company leadership, compensation and training, diversity/inclusion, career development, family-friendly flexibility and values and ethics. Private companies and non-profits as well as publicly held businesses were included in the analysis.

Mac Tully, President and Publisher, Bay Area News Group Newspapers, said, "Despite the challenges of the economy, the Bay Area continues to set the standard for progressive companies such as Actuate, which provide positive, enriching work experiences for their employees."
