• VINCI Airports has reached another milestone within the airport modernization project
  • The new runway will serve as the main runway during the upcoming reconstruction of the existing one
  • Increased operational capacity in the first half of 2024

Belgrade, June 7, 2023

BELGRADE AIRPORT, member of the VINCI Airports network, has opened a new, second runway, which will overtake all operations while the current runway is under reconstruction, thus ensuring uninterrupted traffic flow while works are in progress. As part of the modernization and reconstruction project, VINCI Airports will conduct thorough works on reconstruction of the current Belgrade airport runway, for the first time since its construction in 1962.

Works on the new, second runway, located parallel to the current one, began in mid-March 2020. Its length is 3,500 m, 100 m longer than the current runway, with total surface of approximately 210,000 m2. It was designed according to the latest standards in terms of load capacity and built-in materials and enables handling of all aircraft categories. The new main runway is also equipped with the low visibility landing system. The project also included the construction of accompanying manoeuvring areas and 4 new taxiways, while the existing 3 have been reconstructed.

"By putting the new runway into operation, along with the expansion and modernization of the terminal, car parks, access roads and manoeuvring areas, we are significantly increasing the capacity of Belgrade airport. We are ready for traffic recovery and projected growth, focusing on our goal - to enable Nikola Tesla Airport to handle 15 million passengers annually, by the end of the concession period," said François Berisot, Chief Executive Officer of BELGRADE AIRPORT.

The complete reconstruction of the main runway is expected to be completed in the first half of 2024, after which the newly constructed runway will remain in use as a parallel taxiway, and as an alternative runway should the need arises. After the completion of works, the entire system of runways and aircraft manoeuvring areas will be expanded by several new rapid exit taxiways. All this shall enable VINCI Airports to additionally increase the operational capacity of Nikola Tesla Airport, i.e. the optimal number of aircraft landings and take offs per hour, as well as their faster and more efficient handling, which will ensure the necessary operational flexibility.

All key infrastructure works at the airport are planned to be completed by the end of this year thus nearing the objective set by VINCI Airports to make Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport a new hub of South-east Europe.
