Smart Knowledge Management to Cost-Effective Field DevelopmentPublished 08.08.2016
Stimulating the engineering teams to make 'lessons-learned' recording an automated and standardised process?
Huge amounts of data are being created and captured throughout the asset life. While there has been an exceptional evolution in developing software technologies for digitalising and standardising upstream data, the industry still struggles with finding solutions that would encourage the best re-use of the historical data and knowledge. A lot of valuable engineering time is spent on searching for data and managing knowledge transfer in excel spread sheets.
Can capturing of 'best-lessons' be an automated and standardised process? Yes it can.

Here are some examples why spreadsheets are less effective than a cloud based iQx ™ technology in skills transfer between multiple tools in multinational companies:

  • Poor user-interface when entering and viewing experiences
  • Experiences search difficult and time-consuming due to limited filtering
  • Experiences not detailed enough due to limited space and limited option for adding attachments
  • Challenging to manage QC/QA process.

Case Study: big data delivers big improvements for Det norske (BP Aker)

Det norske oljeselskap, an exploration and production company operating in the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS), sees the benefit of having access to big amounts of data in one place and automatisation of knowledge management. Hence, the company was among the first clients to sign for iQx™ in August 2014.
Det norske uses iQx™ for streamlining and standardising the company's process around collecting and analysing well data and operational experiences in their Ivar Aasen field development. In addition to minimising the time the development team spent on offset engineering, iQx™ is also used to identify opportunities for cross-divisional training and skills development. It has since rolled-out the software across its other development projects.
Drilling Supervisor, Trond Eggen Sivertsen, comments: 'Today, iQx™ is a daily part of Det norske's standard working processes. The automatic synchronisation of iQx™ with all industry recognised drilling reporting systems and publicly available databases enables iQx™ user to experience visualised displays despite the original format of numerical value. The engineers save a lot of time normally spent on manual data search and processing.

Additionally, the individual learning in each project is saved and made accessible on a company level. Based on the results recorded on the Ivar Aasen field development, Det norske has seen that by standardising the knowledge management process, it is possible to locate features for improvement of effectiveness by minimising human error and ensuring motivation for working with optimisation across the company.

This leads to a higher and more consistent level of quality in our projects, concept selection and well planning.'
