Albena Resort - Your Escape

Each of us at some point in our lives has run away from something boring because of something interesting. Whether as a student you ran away from class to see friends or you didn't go to work by getting a sick note, so that you can just indulge in a little relaxation. There has always been an escape. And now, we really want to present you an interview of some escapees caught in the act and wishing to remain anonymous. To make it easier, we will call them Mark and Anna, and we will keep their real names and faces a secret, because we want them to choose their favorite Albena again for their escape from boring work and gray everyday life.

Interview in Maritim Hotel Paradise Blue 5* from May 22nd 2021 Where are you from?

We are from a small town with 23,000 inhabitants in Germany, in the province of Bavaria.

How was your trip to Bulgaria? Did you have any difficulties due to the pandemic situation at the moment?

No, the trip was very pleasant. The airport from which we took off is 25 to 30 minutes by car from where we live. Memmingen Airport is a small airport, the plane took off quite normally, so practically everything went normally without delays. There was absolutely no problem with coronavirus tests. The flight lasted less than expected because we had a headwind. We arrived here in Varna at the airport in two hours. We rented a car and headed to the hotel.

Was your flight direct?

Yes, we flew with a direct flight from Memmingen to Varna.

Did you have any worries about your trip?

No, no, none. We knew what awaited us. The fact that in any case here in Bulgaria we can move much more freely than in Germany, especially in Bavaria, we were very happy and really looked forward to this trip.

Have you been to Bulgaria before?

Anna: So I'm here for the fourth time and my husband for the second time!

Great! And what do you especially like in Bulgaria?

Definitely the sea. Yes, we do not have a sea in Bavaria, only the Lake Constance, but this, of course, is not a real sea. In fact, the people here as well. They are very friendly and much calmer than us in Germany - especially in the current situation. So many of them are mentally exhausted due to constant lockdowns - this situation lasts too long. And here all the shops are open.

Is this your first time in Albena?

Anna: No, I've been to Albena twice before, to another hotel, not the Maritim Hotel.

And what do you like in Albena?

Anna: I think the location at the beach is very nice. And the location of the resort is also very good, near Varna and near Balchik.

How do you like our sports program?

Mark: We took part in aqua aerobics once and we were very happy with it. In fact, we wanted to go to the gym here, because at home all the gyms are closed until further notice. So we still don't know if and when they can reopen, and that situation has been going on since last fall. And here we knew that everything was open. So I made inquiries and then told my wife directly that when we came here, she would be able to go to the gym, swim and practice water aerobics. All these things that we are currently deprived of in Germany. During our previous visits to Albena we went swimming.

What we especially like here is the beer. It is very tasty. It is the local beer, and here the food is very, very good. For example, I like to drink Merlot, but at home, in Germany, I don't really come across any Bulgarian Merlot wine. In Germany, Bulgarian wines are not sold at all. But I have tried many Bulgarian Merlot wines here and they are superb, really superb. The culinary aspect suits us especially well, because we eat everything. We also like to eat pork, and here we can find everything. There are fish specialties here, fresh from the sea; There is pork here, also grilled. There are wonderful salads and vegetables here and everything is fresh, because everything grows even better here than back home. Tomatoes and cucumbers we actually coming from Belgium and the Netherlands and they are simply grown to become large faster. Tomatoes are red, but tasteless. Here, however, I ate vegetables with a vegetable flavor again, because there is more sun here and that is why they are mature in the sun.

At the same time, we find the culture interesting. We still haven't been able to see many things in person, but we've seen a lot of movies on YouTube, and I've only been getting to know Bulgaria since October last year. I didn't know much about this country before. I was surprised by the diverse culture of Bulgaria; what influences have practically shaped the country over the millennia. We will definitely look at some cultural centers! It is also great that in Bulgaria there is such a variety of places that there are ski areas here. We have always skied in the Alps, but last winter, this was not possible in Germany, as the lifts remained closed along with hotels and restaurants. And here there is sea and mountains; we also like to walk in nature, for example. There are really great places for a walk in nature, here it is even possible to go rock climbing, which we also know from our homeland. There are also these beautiful golf courses on the rocks along the beach, a little north of here - it's just fantastic. And that's why we always say, 'This is our country, even after we retire.' Language alone is a challenge, but we've found that many, many people can speak English more than we've been told.
