PARIS, Dec. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that Mendocino County, Calif., has deployed an advanced public safety network aimed at enhancing network interoperability and emergency response with more reliable and secure communications across multiple agencies within the county.

The new network enables Mendocino County to manage its public safety network from a single platform, leveraging Alcatel-Lucent's expertise in multiservice IP, digital microwave and end-to-end network integration services to deliver converged voice, data and video traffic.

Mendocino County encompasses an area of more than 2 million acres or approximately 3,500 square miles. Mendocino County turned to Alcatel-Lucent for expertise in public safety solutions capable of bridging the county's various agencies' communications networks to better serve the people of the greater community.

"Our goal was to create a network capable of converging traditional mission critical telecom traffic with the county's data traffic not only to meet our needs today, but also to pave the way for new IP applications in the future," said Kristin McMenomey, General Services Agency Director for Mendocino County. "A reliable public safety network is a critical service for any municipality, and interoperability is absolutely essential to meeting that requirement. The new public safety network will help improve efficiencies and collaborations among the many agencies - including first responders and disaster recovery organizations - throughout the county."

"Alcatel-Lucent's success in delivering public safety networks comes from our ability to leverage our combined product and service portfolio to create the kind of public safety network that offers the reliability and security county officials would need during an emergency and to better serve the citizens of Mendocino all of the time," said Walt Paskowski, Vice President of sales for Alcatel-Lucent's North America industry and public safety sector. "The solution we provided Mendocino County is another example of Alcatel-Lucent's unparalleled ability to provide public safety networks that deliver converged data and voice traffic, interoperability among various agencies and increased reliability of the critical communications."

The Alcatel-Lucent solution is based on the MDR 8000 long-haul microwave solution designed to support seamless migration from time division multiplexing (TDM) to Ethernet transport over wireless transport networks. Alcatel-Lucent also is deploying its industry-leading IP/MPLS portfolio including the Alcatel-Lucent 7450 Ethernet Service Switch, Alcatel-Lucent 7250 Service Access Switch and Alcatel-Lucent 5620 Service Aware Manager.
