The Denver-based company said it had a loss of $1.99 per share. Earnings, adjusted for asset impairment costs, came to 5 cents per share.

The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of six analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 6 cents per share.

The oil and natural gas producer posted revenue of $380.6 million in the period. Its adjusted revenue was $895.3 million, which did not meet Street forecasts. Four analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $1.04 billion.

In the final minutes of trading on Wednesday, the company's shares hit $3.48. A year ago, they were trading at $2.60.
