Bglobal Helps Retail Giant Cut Carbon Footprint

Bglobal plc - the UK's leading provider of smart energy software and services - has helped a sport retail giant reduce its carbon footprint, thanks to its cutting-edge approach to controls, smart metering and remote energy management services and products provided through its subsidiary, Bsmart Energy Solutions.

JD Sports has seen its energy usage drop by almost a quarter on its proof of concept trials, after enlisting the expertise of Bsmart earlier this year.

The Bsmart team worked with the chain to look at ways it could boost the efficiency of each retail store. Among the factors in need of improvement were building design, control and staff habits, which were contributing to large energy bills.

Chris Norburn, Director of Bsmart, said: "Our review highlighted changes that needed to be made across the board. Each of the trial concept stores were struggling with the amount of gasand electricity being consumed, so we put in place a global system to monitor and control usage.

"Overall, the smart energy projects have saved an average of 24 per cent, with one store seeing a 31 per cent reduction."

The project included adding features such as alarm handling (temperatures, overrides and consumptions) with a proactive remote support facility based from the Bsmart office in Darwen.

It aimed to remove workers' influence and ensure that each site was optimised automatically for better efficiency.

The Energy Controllers allowed complete control over lighting systems, air conditioning, heating, over-door heaters, air handling units, destratification fans and metering - all monitored 24 hours a day off site.

Chris added: "The off-site monitoring allows the Bsmart team to remotely rectify any unexpected peaks in energy usage. So, for example, if a store's lights are left on overnight, they can be switched off from the Bsmart office. These small changes have all added up to make a huge reduction in energy usage."

Following the success of the pilot project at JD Sports, which saw one store achieving a kWh fall of 30 per cent, there are plans to expand the system across more UK outlets.

Paul Blake, Group Energy Manager at JD Sports Fashion PLC, said: "I found the Bsmart approach, in assisting JD Retail with attaining its energy targets, to be both professional and dedicated across all aspects of the project - from survey to design, through to delivery and pot project reporting and support.

"Bsmart has in many cases exceeded the energy targets forecast and continues to strive to improve the savings and service provided.

"Sites are now being regularly monitored and reported on, utilising the Remote Energy Management service with proactive approach to any anomalies that may occur. This positively affects energy usage, by using Bsmart's remote data and controls platforms that have been installed."
