Broadcom said the German Federal Patent Court issued a preliminary opinion finding that the company's patent related to high-efficiency video coding is valid, the latest development in Broadcom's patent dispute with Netflix.

The European patent, related to H.265 video coding, is at the heart of an injunction issued in September by the District Court of Munich, which said Netflix infringes the patent when it transmits Ultra HD video.

Broadcom said it has filed a motion with the Munich Court seeking penalties for Netflix's lack of compliance with the injunction. The patent dispute between Broadcom and Netflix stretches back to 2018.

Representatives for Netflix didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
