New Battery System Free of Cobalt and Nickel Could Come into Reality

Central Glass Co., Ltd. has been collaborating with IBM Research on bringing a novel new battery into commercial development. Originally designed by IBM Research, this innovative battery uses a cathode material free of the heavy metals cobalt and nickel.

Please refer to the following IBM Research blog post; https://www.ibm.com/blogs/research/2019/12/heavy-metal-free-battery/

This unique battery has shown the potential to surpass existing lithium ion batteries in the following ways:

  • Lower cost materials: Free of cobalt, nickel, and other expensive heavy metals with sourcing concerns.
  • Faster charging: Less than five minutes required to reach an 80 percent state of charge (SOC), without compromising specific discharge capacity.
  • High power density: More than 10,000 W/L (exceeding the power level that lithium ion battery technology can achieve).
  • High energy density: More than 800 Wh/L, comparable to the state-of-art lithium ion battery.
  • Low flammability of electrolytes

Central Glass will continue to collaborate with IBM Research to bring into reality this cutting-edge battery which has the potential to address contemporary environmental issues. As one of the top battery electrolyte suppliers in the world, Central Glass has led the industry through our innovative manufacturing methods and development of unique additives to improve battery performance. The Central Glass Group will continue to strengthen our position in the global market by promptly meeting the needs of today's society, and is prepared to meet the increasing demand for electrolytes stemming from stricter vehicle emissions regulations worldwide by utilizing our global supply system in Japan, Korea, China, and Europe to enable an annual production capacity of 50,000 tons. Aware of the risk of growing environmental problems, Central Glass will continue to contribute to finding solutions through battery research and development.
