1.4 TWh! Single-day Power Generation of the World's Largest Clean Energy Corridor Sets Historical Record

2023-08-31

On August 25th, the world's largest clean energy corridor, consisting of six cascade hydropower plants: Wudongde, Baihetan, Xiluodu, Xiangjiaba, Three Gorges, and Gezhouba HPPs, achieved a daily power generation of 1.468 TWh, setting a historical record. The robust transmission of green and clean electricity to power distribution areas such as East China, Central China, and South China has effectively alleviated electricity shortages, making a significant contribution to ensuring the security and supply of power in China, as well as promoting the green and low-carbon transformation of our energy sector.

Recently, the upper Yangtze River basin has experienced a heavy rainfall, while the power consumption in the power distribution areas remains at a high level. This presents a dual challenge for the cascade hydropower plants to ensure both flood prevention and power supply. CYPC takes on the role of being a pioneer in flood control and energy supply, managing the six cascade hydropower plants with a strong sense of responsibility. Adhering to the relevant orders from the Changjiang Water Resources Commission of the Ministry of Water Resources, State Grid, and China Southern Power Grid, CYPC has increased the outflow from the Three Gorges Hydropower Plant, and enhanced its peak power generation capacity. Meanwhile, CYPC further intensified consultations on dispatch, diligently managed hydrological and meteorological forecasts, and continuously optimized dispatch plans. Besides, CYPC attached equal emphasis to flood control and energy supply. Specifically, it strengthened emergency management, patrol inspections of equipment and facility, online monitoring and diagnostic analysis, and carefully arranged emergency shifts and information reporting. On July 25th, the six cascade power plants achieved a daily peak load regulation capacity exceeding 33,000 MW, breaking the historical record for the third time. From August 8th to 25th, the cascade power plants consistently generated over 1 TWh of electricity each day for 18 consecutive days, providing a consistent, stable, and reliable supply of clean electricity to power distribution areas.

In the following days, CYPC will closely monitor the recent heavy rainfall in the Yangtze River Basin and changes in supply and demand in power distribution areas. It will continue to provide accurate water and rainfall regime forecasts in the Yangtze River Basin, providing flood protection in the Yangtze River Basin and contributing clean energy to the society.
