PRESS RELEASE
Romanian transmission system operator Transelectrica brings one of the most significant energy sector issues to the European agenda: strengthening energy security and cooperation of transmission system operators in Eastern Europe, with a unique event at the European Parliament
Bucharest, November 3, 2023. Transelectrica, the Romanian Power Grid Company and a key player in the energy sector in Eastern Europe announces a major event on November 8, 2023, in Brussels. The event will be hosted by the European Parliament's Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and is titled "Strengthening Energy Security and Cooperation of Transmission and System Operators in Eastern Europe." The event will focus on thematic discussions with particular relevance in the current energy sector context. It aims to promote a dynamic exchange of common solutions for bilateral and regional cooperation, energy security enhancement, energy market design, and the most efficient approaches for energy transition.
Energy security has become a significant concern for Romania and other countries in the region due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. The power systems of Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova were synchronously interconnected with the European energy transmission grid in March 2022. As a result, ensuring energy security is crucial for promoting stability and reducing risks to the energy supply in the region.
This unique debate will bring together transmission and energy system operators from Eastern Europe, along with top energy management representatives from Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Albania, Poland, and Slovakia. The discussion will include key decision- makers from the European Commission and Members of the European Parliament. Mrs. Tinne VAN der STRAETEN, Minister for Energy of Belgium, will be a special guest, providing significant input into the discussions. Belgium holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the first six months of 2024.
The event will focus on the key themes that shape the current energy security architecture in Eastern Europe. It aims to provide a comprehensive analysis and conclude with a set of effective practices to enable the countries of this region to develop effective bilateral and regional cooperation. This will result in enhanced energy security and energy market development.
This significant debate held in the heart of Europe, at the European Parliament, provides a unique opportunity to bring the future of energy in Eastern Europe onto the European public agenda. It is also a chance to explore ways to strengthen the energy system and move towards sustainable energy solutions.
The Romanian Power Grid Company, Transelectrica, is organizing this event to encourage dialogue among all stakeholders. The goal is to create a significant alliance that will help build a more secure and sustainable energy future in Eastern Europe.
The national electricity transmission company, Transelectrica SA, manages and operates a network of over 9,000 kilometers of overhead high voltage power lines (400 kV, 220 kV, and 110 kV) and 81 transformer stations throughout the country.
