Baramati

A corporate responsibility initiative by Cummins

Baramati, INDIA: Cummins Group in India, the leading manufacturer of engines, generator sets and related components and technologies reinforced its commitment to the local communities by installing a biogas unit at the Agricultural Development Trust (ADT) Girls Hostel, today. Funded by Cummins India Foundation, the biogas unit was inaugurated at the hands of Ashwath Ram, Vice President, Operations - Tata Cummins Limited, in the presence of the Trustees of ADT.

Based on a technology developed by Cummins, the kitchen waste, collected from five different canteens within the educational premises of ADT, is now being processed and converted into biogas. This biogas is being used as fuel for cooking and heating purposes; thus replacing LPG and preserving fossil fuel reserves.
Accumulation of kitchen waste and its disposal was becoming a major concern for the authorities. Following a research, Cummins has installed a biogas unit with a capacity to process 500 kilograms of biodegradable waste. Currently, the unit is converting 250 kilograms of waste into 9 kilograms of biogas each day. This is helping to cook meals for 100 girls, heat water for bathing at the Hostel, and subsequently bring savings of approximately INR 91,000 per annum to the Trust. The unit is expected to serve its full capacity in the coming days.
Speaking on this occasion, Ashwath Ram, Vice President, Operations - Tata Cummins Limited said, "This initiative is in alignment with two of the three focus areas of Corporate Responsibility at Cummins, namely; Energy and Environment and Local Infrastructure Development. As part of our continued efforts towards serving the communities, we are humbled to play our role in
developing a sustainable solution that resolves garbage menace, recycles natural resources and effectively utilizes the by-product for generating power."
"The Hostel has been a collaborative effort of various organizations and individuals to help needy meritorious girls from rural Maharashtra. We are pleased that Cummins has joined hands with ADT in furthering the cause," says Smt. Sunanda Pawar, Trustee, Agricultural
Development Trust, Baramati.
