MIDLAND, Texas (AP) _ Diamondback Energy Inc. (FANG) on Monday reported a loss of $739 million in its fourth quarter.

On a per-share basis, the Midland, Texas-based company said it had a loss of $4.68. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, came to 82 cents per share.

The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of 13 analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 80 cents per share.

The energy exploration and production company posted revenue of $769 million in the period, which missed Street forecasts. Ten analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $769.8 million.

For the year, the company reported a loss of $4.52 billion, or $28.59 per share, swinging to a loss in the period. Revenue was reported as $2.81 billion.

Diamondback shares have climbed 41% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Monday, shares hit $68.40, a drop of 13% in the last 12 months.
