MIDLAND, Mich. (AP) _ Dow Inc. (DOW) on Thursday reported a third-quarter loss of $25 million, after reporting a profit in the same period a year earlier.

The Midland, Michigan-based company said it had a loss of 4 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, were 50 cents per share.

The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of seven analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 33 cents per share.

The materials science posted revenue of $9.71 billion in the period, also exceeding Street forecasts. Four analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $9.34 billion.

Dow Inc. shares have declined 11% since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has risen slightly more than 6%. The stock has risen 3% in the last 12 months.
