East Japan Railway Co. said Friday it was experiencing system disruptions with its Mobile Suica app and "Eki-net" online reservation system, with unusual traffic patterns suggesting a cyberattack.

The operator, known as JR East, has consulted with police, but it remains unknown when the issue will be resolved. Train operations are not affected.

According to the railway company, users began experiencing difficulties accessing services on Mobile Suica app and Eki-net from around 5:30 p.m.

While topping up through the app is currently unavailable, the mobile version of the public transport card can still be used if there is a remaining balance. Funds can also be added at terminals using cash.
