Ecopetrol completed the construction of the Cartagena Refinery's solar farm, with a capacity of 22.1 megawatts which will be able to deliver up to 34.4 million kilowatt hours annually.

This energy is equivalent to the consumption of 18,200 homes in Colombia. The commissioning of this solar farm will be done in two phases: the first will bring in 4 megawatts and the second will bring in the remaining capacity.

The completion of the works was completed this Friday in a protocol ceremony attended by the President of the Republic, Gustavo Petro Urrego; the president of Ecopetrol, Ricardo Roa Barragan; the Minister of Mines and Energy, Andres Camacho Morales; the manager in charge of the refinery, Edna Guerra Pacheco, departmental and municipal authorities.

The Ecopark contributes to the reduction of emissions from the Cartagena Refinery by about 21 thousand tons of CO2 per year, which is equivalent to 5 million 200 thousand vehicles leaving circulation in Bogota for 3 days.

It is the only solar farm built inside a refinery in Latin America and the first solar project executed by Ecopetrol. It was built on a 19.9-hectare site of the Refinery and has 40,146 panels.

This energy will be incorporated into the refinery's operations, replacing self-generation with gas, at a time when the country is facing the El Nino phenomenon. 370 people from the Caribbean region participated in its construction, including 185 women (50% of the total number of people hired), most of whom were trained in courses on solar panel installation and photovoltaic power generation, supported by Ecopetrol.
