U.S. defence contractor SAIC has landed its first contract with the Pentagon to integrate a small satellite, leveraging a partnership with spacecraft manufacturer GomSpace.

SpaceNews Magazine reports from the 39th Space Symposium in Colorado Spring, highlighting that SAIC has been tasked by Pentagon to develop and deploy a satellite to demonstrate cutting-edge technologies in space, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, edge computing and software-defined radio communications with a "zero-trust" cybersecurity architecture. The spacecraft is projected to launch in 2025 "to serve as proof of concept for new capabilities."

"We are very excited to be involved with our partners at SAIC in this important mission for the Office of the Secretary of Defence," said Frank Tobin, President and CEO of GomSpace North America.

GomSpace CEO, Carsten Drachmann comments: "As part of announced strategy to expand in North America, our US team lead by Frank Tobin, have over the past year diligently collaborated with SAIC to establish a unified platform tailored to meet the specific requirements of government entities in the USA. I am thrilled that SAIC has successfully secured the inaugural contract for their proof of concept, marking an important milestone in our partnership".

GomSpace clarifies that the recent announcement, as reported by SpaceNews, is a continuation of the progress outlined in the company's March 12, 2024, press release regarding the Satellite Partnership with SAIC in North America. While this development does not represent a new order for GomSpace presently, it represents a significant milestone in the efforts to establish a robust market presence and future growth trajectory within the United States.
