A Kenya-headquartered company Serengeti Energy has said its 5-MW hydropower project in Lesotho has reached financial close, paving the way for construction to begin.

According to International Water Power on February 12, the Boston Hydro project on a river within the Lesotho Highlands Water Scheme is set to begin commercial operations in July 2025.

The company also announced that it is joining neighbouring South Africa’s first wind-hydro-solar wheeling renewable energy collaboration as the exclusive hydroelectric power partner after signing a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Growthpoint Properties, a real estate investment trust managing more than 500 properties.

The 30 GWh per year of electricity that will be generated by the Boston Hydro project plant will be distributed via the grid owned by South African power utility Eskom, and traded by Etana Energy, a local green energy trader, to various Growthpoint Properties commercial buildings across South Africa.
