- Chungju's only national inland wetland protection area … Covered with waste due to discharge from dams during heavy rains last summer

- To conserve 18 endangered species, including scaly-sided merganser (Mergus squamatus), Gobiobotia brevibarba, and Aster danyangensis, and 865 wild animals and plant species

About 70 executives and employees of Hyundai Elevator visited Binae Island (Yangseong-myeon, Chungju-si, Chungcheongbuk-do), a national inland wetland protection area, and carried out biodiversity conservation activities on December 13.

Designated as the 28th national inland wetland protection area in 2021, Binae Island is a haven for 18 endangered species, including scaly-sided merganser (Mergus squamatus), Gobiobotia brevibarba, and Aster danyangensis, and 865 wild animals and plant species. The island was covered with waste due to discharge from the Chungju Dam and Goesan Dam during heavy rains last summer. Despite several times of restoration work, the recovery is not yet complete because of its size.

Hyundai Elevator staff cleaned up tricky sites, collecting waste caught in reed forests and willows, and looked for surroundings threatening the safe habitat of wild animals and plants.

"Binae Island has high ecological conservation value and is Chungju's famous tourist attraction and popular TV series filming location," said ESG Management Team Leader Doohee Kim. "As a representative company in Chungju, the staff agreed to get together for conservation activities to promote mutual benefits with the local community and fulfill social responsibility," he added.

Starting with this activity, Hyundai Elevator plans to consistently communicate with Chungju City and continue biodiversity conservation activities, such as collecting heavy rain waste and removing bur cucumber, an ecosystem-disrupting plant.
