Bomb Blast Safety Circle

24 March 2022

3DX Bomb Blankets and Bomb Blast Safety Circle suppress the blast and fragmentation of IEDs. They are deployed around suspected Improvised Explosive Devices and other explosives. They reduce the damage caused by detonating bombs.

When a suspected bomb is found the safety circle or blast containment ring is placed around it. A bomb suppression blanket is then placed over the top. This directs any explosion upwards and contains the explosive fragments. It also avoids direct contact with the bomb which makes the surroundings safer. The device can then be examined or made safe for disposal.

For larger bombs two or more safety circles and blast blankets can be used. They can be deployed by either EOD teams or untrained staff.

Bomb Suppression Blanket (BSB) and Blast Containment Ring (BCR) are commonly used is areas such as:-

  • Airports
  • Government buildings
  • High-footfall public areas
  • Public events
  • Railway stations
  • Shopping malls
  • Hotels
  • Bus terminals
  • Post offices
  • Mail rooms
  • Festivals and fairs
  • Theatres
  • Entertainment venues ranging from stadia and concert halls to museums

Our bomb blast blankets and blast circles meet STANAG 2920 standards. Typical circles and blankets are designed to meet either V50 @ 400 m/s or FSP V50 @ 500 m/s. Higher protections levels are available. FSP is Fragment Simulating Projectiles.

Our V50 400 m/s blankets are produced from multiple layers of ballistic nylon. These are light enough to be easily manhandled. V50 500 m/s blankets use interleaved multi-layers of Aramid and ballistic nylon. They offer cost-effective s protection and also are easy to deploy.

Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) are widely used by terrorists. They are typically handmade or improvised. And are often made using stolen explosives, blasting supplies, fuel oil, fertilizer, hydrogen peroxide, gunpowder etc.

Blast containment rings and bomb blankets are frequently deployed against pipe bombs, suspicious packages and mail.

Pipe Bomb

Pipe bombs are the most common type of terrorist bomb. They are typically made using low-velocity explosives packed in a tightly capped pipe. They frequently employ gunpowder in iron, steel, aluminium, or copper pipes. Sometimes they are wrapped with nails to cause greater injury and damage.

Suspicious packages

Suspicious packages are frequently left in public places. Mostly they are harmless and were left by accident. However, they must always be treated as dangerous until proven otherwise.

Mailed bombs

Postal services and couriers are frequently used by terrorists for bomb delivery. Many are hoax packages from disgruntled employees or terrorists. As with any suspicious package they must be treated as real until identified.

3DX Bomb Blankets and Bomb Blast Safety Circles or BSBs are very cost effective. They are easy to use and direct and contain blast fragments and shrapnel from explosive devices.

They are employed by armed forces, police units, specialist EOD teams and safety personnel. They are also commonly available in government buildings, corporate offices and high pedestrian traffic areas around the world.
