ITOCHU Corporation (headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo; Keita Ishii, President & COO; hereinafter "ITOCHU") announced today that it has offered recycled ocean plastic waste that drifted ashore in Tsushima-shi, Nagasaki Prefecture as a recycled raw material to MITSUBISHI PENCIL CO., LTD. (hereinafter "MITSUBISHI PENCIL") in cooperation with TerraCycle Japan LLC (headquartered in Yokohama-shi, Kanagawa Prefecture; Eric Kawabata, APAC General Manager; hereinafter "TerraCycle"), and that MITSUBISHI PENCIL has developed a ballpoint pen that partially makes use of this raw material.
This product was the first in the stationary industry to receive Eco Mark No. 164 (products reusing ocean plastic waste) certification using ocean plastic as a raw material, and the goal is to expand to various uses for the ocean plastic not limited to only stationary.

Expansion of Use for Ocean Plastic Waste
Ocean plastic waste is an issue that has drawn global attention in recent years. Measures addressing this issue have been a matter of urgency. Specifically, it is estimated that an annual total of about 20,000 m3 of ocean plastic waste has drifted ashore in Tsushima City, Nagasaki Prefecture.*1 It has been an issue of serious public concern. ITOCHU has focused on creating mechanisms to upcycle textiles and plastic ocean waste that has washed up on the shore into new products by selecting and pulverizing the waste to make it into a resource. We have been progressing with practical applications of ocean plastic waste, offering garbage bags*2 jointly developed with Sanipak Company Of Japan, Ltd. to garbage collection volunteers in Tsushima and introducing*3 a shopping basket made from ocean plastic waste with FamilyMart Co., Ltd. We aim to expand the uses of ocean plastic waste in a wide range of fields, including miscellaneous goods.
We have listed "Enhancing Our Contribution to and Engagement with the SDGs Through Business Activities" as one of our Basic Policies in our medium-term management plan, and we will contribute towards the realization of a recycling-oriented society by raising awareness of the ocean plastic waste problem and by collecting and recycling this plastic.
