JT Recognized on the "White 500" as a Leader in Employee Health and Productivity Management for the Sixth Consecutive Year
Japan Tobacco (JT) (TSE: 2914) today announces that it has been recognized under "The 2022 Certified Health & Productivity Management Outstanding Organizations Recognition Program", commonly known as the "White 500", in the large enterprise category for the sixth consecutive year.

The program, conducted by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Nippon Kenko Kaigi*, recognizes the top 500 organizations that view their employees' health as essential from a business management perspective, implementing and strategically promoting various initiatives to support the improvement of their health.

JT believes the physical and mental wellbeing of our employees is essential to our sustainable growth and we remain committed to maintaining a work environment in which each employee has the opportunity to stay healthy and be reassured that they can focus on their work in a safe environment," said Yoshiyuki Mishima, Senior Vice President, People & Culture. "Our commitment remained unchanged in 2021 even during the COVID-19 pandemic. We continued our business activities while implementing thorough infection prevention measures, offering workplace vaccination, and providing other necessary measures. We also continued to actively promote diverse and flexible ways of working, such as working from home and utilizing online meetings. The safety of all our employees, their families, and all of our stakeholders and are critical to us and will continue to remain our top priority."

JT believes that its inclusion in the "White 500" reinforces its commitment towards continuously adapting its workplace to ensure all colleagues can work comfortably. JT will continue to actively promote employee health, positioning it as one of its key management challenges.

JT's initiatives in health and productivity management

Providing a comprehensive health assistance program

  • Support employee health through a program led by Senior Vice President of People & Culture and under the policy, "declaration of health and productivity management" signed by the JT Group CEO.
  • Set monitoring indicators focusing on physical health, mental health, engagement, and labor productivity and make continuous improvements in measures to promote employee health through the PDCA cycle (Plan-Do-Check-Action).
  • Place a specialized full-time team at its head office building and occupational health staff members (11 doctors and 34 nurses) in 11 other sites across Japan, dedicated to detailed health support. Examples of assistance include conducting assessments and advising all employees based on their annual medical exams and individual lifestyle habits, as well as hosting periodic events suitable to the characteristics of each office location.

Promoting diverse ways of working

  • Implement policies for employees to choose and realize diverse ways of working:
    - Enable employees to work remotely
    - Eliminate of core working hours in the flexible working scheme
    - Offer a shortened working-hour system for childcare and nursing care
    - Pay commute allowances based on the number of days one commutes to the office
    - Pay work from home allowances based on the number of days one works from home
  • Facilitate the use of PCs and other equipment as well as access to the office network necessary to work from home.
Conducting preventative measures for COVID-19
  • Encourage employees to work from home and utilize online meetings, and when required to meet in person, enforce employees to wear masks, practice social distancing, ventilate their workspace, carry out disinfection procedures, and follow other preventative measures.
  • Cover testing costs for employees, including PCR tests, required for occasions such as operational necessity.
  • Offered workplace vaccination for approximately 20,000 applicants, or approximately 40,000 vaccine administrations, of JT Group employees, their families, and others in 2021. Opportunities for applicants to receive their third administration is scheduled in 2022 as well.

Promoting physical and mental wellbeing
  • Promote health assistance rooted in JT's recognition and respect towards diversity to help employees with diverse backgrounds find their unique method to promote their wellbeing based on personal values, lifestyles and differences.
  • Host enjoyable JT health programs out of approximately 40 different themes available - ranging from exercise, diet, sleep, and more - that are applicable to each workplace and their needs and concerns. Programs in 2021 were held online.
  • Hosted a company-wide walking-rally event twice in 2021 to inspire employees to exercise and simultaneously contribute to society. JT donated a total of JPY 1,857,760 to children in Africa thanks to a total of 6,224 employees that participated individually or as a team.
