Jungfrau Railways: Service interruptions due to cable shortening and construction work

03/15/2021 | 06:00pm EDT

The new Eiger Express tricable gondola has been in operation since 5 December 2020. Now the first planned cable shortening is on the programme. The Eiger Express will thus be suspended during the week of 26 to 30 April 2021 and from 3 to 7 May 2021. As the construction work for track 3 on the Jungfraujoch goes into the final phase at the same time, Jungfrau Railways will also stop operations during this time during the week. On weekends, the Eiger Express and Jungfrau Railway will operate according to schedule.

The heaviest and most modern tricable gondola, the Eiger Express, has proven itself in the first few months of operation. Many winter sports enthusiasts and visitors to the Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe have enjoyed the journey past the Eiger North Face to the Eiger Glacier. As is usual with cable cars, the cable must be shortened for the first time after a few months of travel due to expansion. Jungfrau Railways employees will carry out this work together with specialists from Doppelmayr/Garaventa at the end of April and the beginning of May.

For this reason, the operation of the Eiger Express will be suspended from 26 April to 7 May from Monday to Friday. On the weekends of 1/2 May and 8/9 May, the Eiger Express will operate according to normal operating hours. The car park near the terminal will remain open as normal. Opening hours of the shops in the terminal may vary at short notice.

Jungfrau Railway service suspensions

The work for track 3 continues on the Jungfraujoch. The expansion should help to manage the flow of guests at Jungfraujoch station even better and more efficiently in the future. In order to intensify and complete the construction work for the last phase, Jungfrau Railway will stop services from Monday to Friday, as will the Eiger Express, from 26 April to 7 May. On the weekends of 1/2 May and 8/9 May, the Jungfrau Railway will operate according to the timetable.

Wengernalp Railway service suspensions

These temporary closures of the Jungfrau Railway will result in the Wengernalp Railway (WAB) between Wengen and Kleiner Scheidegg being suspended from Monday 26 April 2021 up to and including Friday 7 May 2021 for the purposes of concentrated maintenance of the track and rolling stock. Between Lauterbrunnen and Wengen, the WAB will continue to operate daily at half-hourly intervals according to the timetable.

From 22 May 2021, the travel time between Lauterbrunnen and Kleine Scheidegg will be reduced by up to 10 minutes, thanks to a new three-way rotation with a total of six three-part panoramic trains. The half-hour cycle between Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg can be offered with three instead of four trains over a large part of the year.

On the Grindelwald side, the WAB will run between Grindelwald and Kleine Scheidegg every hour up to and including 9 May 2021 according to the timetable. Maintenance work will be carried out on the WAB route on the Grindelwald side from 10 May 2021 to and including 21 May 2021. Therefore, the WAB will not operate in this period. The Eiger Express will then be in operation again every day.
