Lagardere SA has denied wrongdoing after the French daily Le Monde reported that the national financial prosecutor's office opened an investigation into the company.

The French media company said Saturday that it denied "any assembly vote purchase, as well as, more generally, any offense or irregularity mentioned in the Le Monde article. The company acts within the law and will vigorously defend itself against any contrary allegation."

The article, published Friday, said the prosecutor's office opened the investigation in April citing misuse of corporate assets, vote buying, inaccurate accounts and the dissemination of false or misleading information.

Lagardere said it "deplores the press leaking of information which would result from an investigation procedure."
