Leonardo DRS said Wednesday that it has been awarded contracts worth more than $3 billion for integrated electric propulsion system products for the U.S. Navy's Columbia-class submarines.

The Arlington, Va.-based company was chosen to design and make the permanent magnet main propulsion electric motor, the propulsion motor drives, switchgear, and the propulsion controls for the submarines.

The components will be made at the company's facilities in Fitchburg, Mass.; Menomonee Falls, Wis.; Danbury, Conn.; and High Ridge, Mo.

Last year, the Navy awarded more than $1 billion in contracts to Leonardo DRS to provide integrated electric propulsion components for the Columbia submarines.
