NEW YORK (AP) _ Loews Corp. (L) on Monday reported a second-quarter loss of $835 million, after reporting a profit in the same period a year earlier.

On a per-share basis, the New York-based company said it had a loss of $2.96. Earnings, adjusted for investment costs and non-recurring costs, came to $1.19 per share.

The commercial property and casualty insurance company posted revenue of $2.31 billion in the period.

Loews shares have fallen 31% since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has increased 1%. The stock has decreased 31% in the last 12 months.
