The supervisory board supports extending his position at the head of the group by another five years, while finance chief Remco Steenbergen's contract will also be extended, the report said, citing unnamed sources.

Lufthansa declined to comment on the reported contract extensions.

Spohr, a 56-year-old industrial engineer and pilot, has headed the Lufthansa Group since May 2014. The pandemic and the crash of a plane belonging to subsidiary Germanwings in the French Alps in 2015 have been the biggest challenges of his tenure so far.
