Athens, Aug 21 (EFE).- Manchester United on Friday said the team's captain Harry Maguire was cooperating with Greek police following an "alleged incident" outside a bar on the Greek island of Mykonos.

According to Greek media, the defender was arrested on Thursday night with a group of associates following an altercation with police officers who were trying to break up a brawl. They were then taken to the police station, where they continued to verbally abuse officers.

The details of the situation remain unclear but Manchester United responded in a statement.

"The club is aware of an alleged incident involving Harry Maguire in Mykonos last night.

"Contact has been made with Harry, and he is fully cooperating with the Greek authorities. At this time we will be making no further comment."

Images of the defender spending time at a bar on Mykonos during his summer vacation, apparently that same evening, were published by the website Mykonoslive.tv.

The images showed that very few people in the bar were wearing a face mask.

The Greek government on Friday rolled out stricter measures in popular tourist spots like Mykonos in response to a rise in cases. These include the prohibition of gatherings of more than nine people and parties.

Greece has recorded more than 200 new Covid-19 cases a day so far this month. The country's tally in August is more than the first two months of the pandemic combined.

Maguire became the world's most expensive defender when he moved from Leicester City to Manchester United in 2019 for a fee of around $97 million.

The 27-year-old also plays for the England national team.

He traveled to Mykonos after Manchester United were knocked out of the Europa League semi-finals by Sevilla. The English team will have a delayed start to the new Premier League season given their campaign in Europe lasted into August.

The English top-flight is due to get underway on 12 September, but Manchester United - and Manchester City, who were knocked out of the Champions League - will return on the second weekend of fixtures, against Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton Wanderers respectively. EFE
