Thales, in partnership with MiTAC Information Technology Corp. (MiTAC) will provide an innovative ticketing system for Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation (TRTC). The deployment is expected by 2025.

This project aims to upgrade the gate Electronic Main Module (EMM) and enabling QR and Credit Card payment options on gates along Taipei Metro metro lines.

The Taipei Mass Rapid Transit, also known as Metro Taipei, is operated by the Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation (TRTC), which is owned by the Taiwan Government. It is the first metro system in Taiwan and serves the cities of Taipei and New Taipei. The Taipei City Government has implemented a major policy regarding electronic payments, providing daily 2 million passengers transactions with various options for making contactless payments, in addition to the existing stored value card payment solution in order to provide a seamless and convenience travel to enhance passenger experience.

Thales and its key partner MiTAC Information Technology Corporation in Taiwan, will collaborate on a project to design and implement an upgraded Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system for the Taipei Metro Network and retrofit the existing AFC equipment.

This project aims to enable Multiple Electronic Payment options across 120 stations. The upgraded system will incorporate EMV fare media, including VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and JCB, as well as QR code payment options such as TRTC SJQR and 3rd party QR codes (LinePay Money Transit QR, EasyCard Transit QR, iCash Transit QR). Currently, the payment options are only a contactless token/ticket purchased at vending machine or ticket office and contactless stored value card (Easycard, iCash and iPass).
