Survey: Every Fourth First-Grader Starts School with a Smartphone
Prague 24 August 2017
Every second first-grader sets off for school in September equipped by a mobile phone, tablet, smart watch, or other portable electronic device, a survey conducted by MONETA Money Bank in mid-August with over five hundred respondents found out. Parents most frequently buy their children a smart phone with touch screen (56%). Followed by tablet (37%), regular mobile phone (26%) and smart watch (10%). Parents most typically pay for the purchase of portable electronics for their first-graders in cash from their savings and more than two thirds (70%) spend up to five thousand CZK. Nine out of ten parents in the survey are going to talk to their children about the value of this money.
The main reason motivating parents to buy a mobile device is according to MONETA Money Bank's survey attempt to stay in touch with their child (79%). However, parents also purchase electronic devices for their children to make them happy (26%) or support their education (21%).
Three quarters of the parents expect their children to use various mobile applications on their devices. The top five in descending order include educational applications, games, applications for taking or viewing photos and videos, listening to music, and reading books.
"We have found out that even the smallest school children own advanced mobile devices with applications. This shows digital literacy among many first-graders and their close connection with digital environment. We can expect a sharp rise in the number of digital services users in the future, including banking services," Dalibor Šajar, who is responsible for digital banking at MONETA Money Bank commented on the survey results.
Survey results also show a very good financial situation of the parents. "They are less concerned about buying their children a new mobile phone, computer or other electronic devices, especially due to better financial situation given by current increase in salaries. The price of the products also play its part as well as the current digitalization trends, i.e. shifting various activities into the world of ones and zeroes," Petr Gapko, MONETA Money Bank's chief economist added.
Most respondents will pay for their portable electronic devices in cash (67%), or by debit (31%) or credit card (15%). Parents most frequently shop for electronics in online stores (58%). Some children will inherit their mobile device from their parents or siblings, specifically 17%. Only a fraction of parents (6%) will head to second-hand shops.
