In 2004, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted an International Convention to manage and control Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments, in order to reduce the risk of introducing non-native organisms including bacteria from ships' ballast water.

Without Ballast Water treatment, the organisms and bacteria could cause a serious ecological, economic and public health impact on the receiving environment.

The Ballast Water Management Convention will enter into force 12 months after a total of 30 states, representing 35% of the world's shipping tonnage, have ratified it. At this moment 33 countries ratified the Convention, representing 26.5% of the gross tonnage.

UV treatment of the ballast water has been proven to be highly effective
and the Nedap technology to drive the applied UV lamps has been successfully adopted in a rapidly increasing number of Ballast Water Treatment systems worldwide.

Specially for the retrofit on existing ships, where availability of shipboard power will be limited, the energy efficient Nedap technology with an excellent Power Factor is of paramount value.
