This two-day metallurgy class, a joint effort of the Sales, Quality, and Operational departments, has been regularly presented twice yearly since 2015. The course covers the broad spectrum of steelmaking and all related processes, from product grades and categories through melting and casting and downstream through all finishing operations.

Ken Crain, Vice President of Quality, said, "The primary purpose of this class is to educate steel industry employees in a relatable way. We want to acquaint our attendees with the fundamental metallurgical processes and principles employed in producing flat-roll carbon steels and show them the processes in person. There is a lot of technology and processing control, starting from the melting and casting that goes into making a Galvanized, Cold Rolled, or even a Hot Rolled coil."

Each day of learning is followed by tours of Pennsylvania's three main operational areas: the Hot Strip Mill and Cold Rolling area at NLMK Pennsylvania and the galvanizing operations at Sharon Coating. The tours allow participants to see the operations first-hand and get something beyond theoretical knowledge.

Throughout the years, the class has undergone a significant transformation. NLMK USA aims to make the course relevant and understandable for a widely varied audience, ranging from entry-level knowledge of metallurgy to technically minded specialists. The constant ongoing review process by seeking customer feedback allows for assessing the class and introducing improvements.

The primary purpose of the class is to promote education and share expertise. It is a resource that NLMK USA offers to the company's customers. "We want to share our expertise and build even stronger relationships with our customers," Crain said. "NLMK strives to be a good partner and provide the best service in the industry - this is another way we can help accomplish that goal."
