PRINCETON, N.J. (AP) _ NRG Energy Inc. (NRG) on Thursday reported a first-quarter loss of $82 million, after reporting a profit in the same period a year earlier.

The Princeton, New Jersey-based company said it had a loss of 33 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, came to 84 cents per share.

The power company posted revenue of $8.09 billion in the period.

NRG shares have fallen 7% since the beginning of the year, while the S&P's 500 index has climbed 11%. The stock has increased 6% in the last 12 months.
