SASKATOON, Saskatchewan (AP) _ Nutrien Ltd. (NTR) on Wednesday reported a first-quarter loss of $35 million, after reporting a profit in the same period a year earlier.

On a per-share basis, the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan-based company said it had a loss of 6 cents. Losses, adjusted for non-recurring gains, came to 12 cents per share.

The results fell short of Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of three analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 4 cents per share.

The producer of potash and other fertilizers posted revenue of $4.19 billion in the period.

Nutrien shares have declined 26% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Wednesday, shares hit $35.43, a decline of 34% in the last 12 months.
