Extending a second chance at life for the those in need

PULAU PINANG, 11 December 2013 - Pantai Holdings Berhad which operates the Pantai and Gleneagles hospitals in Malaysia, today launched its "Life Renewed" campaign, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts. The campaign is aimed at funding medical treatment for needy patients at various Pantai Group hospitals in collaboration with its specialist doctors in Malaysia.
In a heart-warming celebration at Gleneagles Hospital Penang, patients, beneficiaries and their families also gathered at the launch together with senior management team of Pantai and Gleneagles Group of hospitals, specialist doctors and nurses to celebrate the success of the campaign to date.

Chairman of Pantai Holdings Berhad, Datuk Khairil Anuar Abdullah said the company was able to implement this CSR initiative due to Khazanah Nasional Berhad's generous endowment from realized gains through its investment in IHH Healthcare Berhad.

The RM50 million fund was established in July last year at the launch of IHH's initial public offering announced by the Prime Minister, YAB Dato' Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak. Channelled via the Khazanah IHH Healthcare Fund, the fund is expected to assist needy patients in its home markets of Malaysia, Singapore and Turkey with 70% of the total allocated for Malaysia, and would be disbursed through two of IHH Berhad's entities; Pantai Holdings Berhad and International Medical
University (IMU).

Since its inception, the fund has succeeded in completing 170 cases throughout its chain of hospitals all over Malaysia, in which 96 were related to paediatric cardiology, fairly championed by Gleneagles Hospital Ampang and Penang.
"With 'Life Renewed' taking the lead for this fund, we hope to reach into other areas of including Ophthalmology, Urology, Cleft Lip and Palate repair, among others," said Datuk Khairil at the launch of the campaign here.
He said that while some of these conditions may not appear to be life threatening as compared to some of the others, it is deemed as a lifesaver for some families, almost like given a second chance at life.
"The value of the entire programme is beyond monetary. Whilst the company provisions the fund for the less fortunate, the participating hospitals and its doctors are also taking an oath in supporting the greater good where all charges in relation to the programme will be charged at cost.
To date, participating hospitals are Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Gleneagles Ampang, Gelneagles Penang, Pantai Hospital Cheras, Pantai Hospital Ampang, Pantai Hospital Klang, Pantai Hospital Ipoh, Pantai Hospital Ayer Keroh ,Pantai Hospital Batu Pahat and Pantai Hospital Sungai Petani.
In addition to this, IMU has also benefitted from the Fund that led to the expansion of its outreach programme the "IMU Cares" initiative. IMU Cares in as outreach programme where faculty and students venture into rural communities, including orang asli villages to provide basic health and medical screening. With the funding provided by the Khazanah IHH Healthcare Fund, IMU was able to purchase additional

Apart from the utilisation of Fund for its outreach clinic programmes, IMU, which is a leading private healthcare university in Malaysia, also acts as a referral partner via its clinical schools, medical professionals and students, to identify and manage cases within the Fund's criteria.
Meanwhile, on the patient selection process, all applications are managed by selected non-governmental organisations (NGOs) which act as third-party referrals. These cases are then subsequently screened by Pantai and Gleneagles Group of Hospitals' consultants. At present, 16 NGOs have been listed as partners and the list is growing.
In conjunction with the launch event, Khazanah IHH Healthcare Fund also unveiled its logo and new microsite, in hope that it will increase awareness of the fund amongst the public.

The microsite also highlighted various other CSR initiatives undertaken which included the "Life Renewed" campaign efforts at the group's Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital in Singapore and the group's Turkish subsidiary ACIBADEM's CSR initiative in support of the Turkish Ministry of Family and Social Policies.
