Phoenix Group, the UK's largest long-term savings and retirement business, is helping colleagues in Telford and Wythall to learn to how to save lives with the help of Midlands Air Ambulance Charity (MAAC), to coincide with World Trauma Day 2021.

World Trauma Day occurs every year on 17 October. This day focuses on the importance of saving and protecting lives during emergencies. It's also a day to provide education on how to avoid traumatic injuries and deaths.

With this in mind, Phoenix Group is welcoming back one of its former UK charity partners, MAAC, to its Telford and Wythall sites to host Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training for its colleagues.

Cardiac arrest consistently ranks in MAAC's top five reasons for being called out to help people. In the UK, fewer than one in ten people survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. In countries where CPR is taught in schools, as many as one in four survive.

Learning CPR could give Phoenix colleagues the tools to save the life of a loved one, colleague or member of the public if they suffer a cardiac arrest. The one-hour sessions are taking place in person at Phoenix's Telford and Wythall offices.

Andy Moss, Phoenix Life CEO and Group Director, Heritage at Phoenix Group said: "In connection to World Trauma Day, we wanted to help our colleagues across our sites learn a new skill that could potentially help save someone's life. We're delighted to be welcoming back our former charity partner, Midlands Air Ambulance Charity - the work they do is vital to keeping our colleagues and our local communities safe. Phoenix's purpose is to help people secure a life of possibilities and we're proud to continue building long-lasting relationships with our charity partners, even after our formal partnership has come to an end."

Ian Jones, air operations manager for Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, said: "World Trauma Day is an important awareness day for us at Midlands Air Ambulance Charity. With more than 63 per cent of the charity's missions being trauma-related, it's important to use this day to shine a light on the enhanced critical care our crews provide, and what bystanders can do to help the patient before medical expertise even arrives. We are glad Phoenix Group is so supportive of the training we offer, which gives their colleagues vital skills which could help save someone's life before we even arrive on scene."

Phoenix has also been providing sponsorship to MAAC (from July 2020), to enable them to deliver Mission Support Training across the Midlands region, for an 18 month period, providing local people with practical advice on CPR and bleed control techniques. In addition, the funding will provide each group that undertakes the free training with a bleed control kit, including gauze and a tourniquet.
