September 8, 2021 - Researchers from the ALROSA Scientific Research Geological Enterprise (SRGE), with the support of the A.P.Karpinsky All-Russian Scientific Research Geological Institute, have carried out fieldwork in the Markha and Namydzhylakh river valleys in the Olyokminsky District in Yakutia, Russia.

The study area is located in the southern part of the Vilyuy syneclise, a large depression formed over hundreds of millions of years. On its northern edge, the depression contains the Mir and the Internatsionalnaya kimberlite pipes, and the Nakynskaya group of deposits. According to SRGE researchers, virtually all kimberlite pipes, including diamond-bearing pipes, are located along the edges of syneclise depressions like this one.

Researchers from the SRGE have conducted heavy mineral concentrate sampling of sediments from the Namydzhylakh and Markha rivers and collected kimberlite indicator minerals for laboratory and desktop studies.

Aleksandr Tolstov, Director of SRGE, said: 'SRGE's central analytical laboratory is processing the samples received. Preliminary findings indicate the possibility of identifying the location of a future kimberlite deposit near Olyokminsk.'

Once the results are made available, SRGE researchers plan to continue the exploration works, given limited geological exploration works in the area to date.

Aleksandr Kolesnik, head of SRGE's Prognostic and Methodological Support Laboratory for Exploration, said: 'To this day, the diamond-bearing prospects of Olyokminsky District remain understudied. The Amakinskaya expedition in the 1960s was the last time this area was home to large-scale exploration works for diamond deposits. At that time, methods and techniques for complex geological environments were still being developed, and there was no guarantee of a quick result. In the mid-20th century, we did not have the technologies that are available to researchers today.'
