Traditionally, many utilities have been managing their aging metallic pipelines using a replacement approach, which prioritizes a pipe based on its age and failure history. While in some cases, pipe replacement is both financially defensible and necessary, age and failure history alone do not provide enough data to determine if replacement of a pipeline is necessary. In fact, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has found that between 70 and 90 percent of pipes being replaced come out of the ground with remaining useful life.

In the last decade, there has been significant development in metallic pipe inspection approaches and technologies; utilities are now able to confidently determine the condition of their metallic pipes before making rehabilitation or replacement decisions.

In this White Paper, we discuss everything from the steps to successfully manage your metallic pipe inventory to the innovative technologies available gather relevant data on the condition of your metallic pipes, as well as various complementary tools and services available to help utilities understand the condition and remaining useful life of their pipelines.
