When helping our sellers on their journey to 'sold', one of our favourite moments takes place during the initial meeting with a property owner, when we are invited into the living room to scratch beneath the surface of a property, discover the property's past, and learn the many memories made at home.

Understanding the personality and evolution of a property, and the joy it has brought to its current owners, unlocks the ability to discover the true potential of a home - one of the reasons why we encourage direct communication between our buyers and sellers, via the Purplebricks app. It is often these experiences and stories that make a house a home and inspire the imagination of future owners.

"What is it really like to live in a lighthouse?" is not a question you ask aloud too often, but was one of the many questions we were itching to explore with Gemma Hutton, property owner of formerly the largest lighthouse of St. Anne's Head on the Pembrokeshire coastline, a quirky one-of-a-kind property currently on the market with Purplebricks. We recently interviewed Gemma, to delve a little deeper into the reality of what life is really like, living in a lighthouse...

How long have you lived in the property and what was the story behind the purchase?

We have lived in the lighthouse now for 26 years. My father was always a bit of a wild one when it came to business and property. He and a friend were always looking for properties together and they stumbled upon the lighthouse at a silent auction. We are local to the area, so he knew exactly how phenomenal and steeped in history the lighthouse was. A very iconic building in Pembrokeshire. My parents spent a long time changing the building from coast-guard offices into the family home it is today.

What was it about the lighthouse that captured your family's interest when house searching?

The uniqueness of the property, its location and the experiences that come with it. The Pembrokeshire coastline is exceptional, and with it comes the varied elements of the weather. From beautiful sunshine BBQs, to raging storms and watching the white foam spray the air in the thick of the winter, all give this home such a unique quality. The observational lounge at the top of the tower is the perfect place to sit with a cup of tea or a G&T and watch the extraordinary water activities. We get to see tankers, sail boats, speed boats, wildlife, pilot boats, liners, Irish Ferries and so much more. In 1996, we witnessed the MV Sea Empress run aground right by our lighthouse and Dad had the most unbelievable footage.

What makes your lighthouse home so special and unique?

Who else can say they've lived in a lighthouse? Spectacular views, sensational sunsets, wild seas, wind that would blow your socks off, days so still and calm you can only hear the waves crashing on the cliffs. It's pure magic. Yes of course, the lighthouse is exposed to the elements, but she's a phenomenal building which has stood the test of time since the 1200's. It's been a total privilege to have had custody of her, to be the lighthouse keepers.

What are your favourite features?

The tower and the lounge right at the top with 360 degree views. I also love the open plan living spaces, the 8 bedrooms to enjoy with friends and family, and the swimming pool and games room. It really is something quite special.

What's it like living day-to-day in a lighthouse?

Unique, sensational, safe, warm and dry. She now needs new love, new life and a new family to come and enjoy her, celebrate her, and be proud of her like we have been.

What are the plus points of owning a quirky property like yours?

The parties, the stories, the rich history, the iconic nature of owning something so wonderful. The thick walls, the granite tower, the swimming pool, the sauna, the space to sleep 16 people without a fuss. Big family gatherings, big quiet seas, big views, breathtaking salt and sea air in our lungs. Honestly, there is nothing finer. Escaping the city life, embracing the coastline and not one person goes by without admiring her. She really is a force to be reckoned with.

Do you have any styling tips for living in a quirky building, such as a lighthouse?

It's important to recognise that you are on the exposed headland, but really you can do whatever takes your fancy. Nautical themes, modern - whatever you truly love. My parents opted for a family home vibe, so it's ripe for someone to come and take her into the next phase.

If you had to sum-up your property in three words, what would they be?

Exciting, tranquil and mind-blowing.
