Seoul, Feb 29 (EFE).- Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg met Thursday with South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol to talk about ways to cooperate in the extended reality (XR) and artificial intelligence (AI) sectors, two main focus areas on their three-day trip to the country.

"The president said (South Korea) can become an ideal platform to apply Meta's AI, given its extensive portfolio of electronic devices or smart cars," Sung Tae-yoon said at a press conference, director of domestic policy at the South Korean Presidential Office.

Yoon also highlighted national efforts, both private and public, to promote the so-called metaverse, as well as Meta's potential for cooperation with South Korean hardware and device manufacturing companies for the development of new XR viewers.

Zuckerberg spoke of the reliability of South Korean electronics and the important global role played by a company like Samsung Electronics, the world's largest manufacturer of memory chips, and the potential for cooperation with Meta.

He met Wednesday in Seoul with the top managers of Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics to talk about cooperation in XR and AI.

Zuckerberg first met with LG head Cho Joo-wan to discuss business strategies and developments of new XR services and viewers. He later met with Samsung Electronics President Lee Jae-yong.

Although the content of the meeting was not made public, it is believed both spoke about AI, since Meta has announced its plans to develop its own artificial general intelligence (AGI) model and design a specific chip. Samsung has just opened a new IGA research and development division in Silicon Valley.

Anonymous sources cited by Yonhap said Zuckerberg, who leaves Thursday for India, also met Wednesday with at least five South Korean AI and XR startups at Meta's offices in Seoul. EFE
