Komaki-shi, Aichi, Japan October 8, 2015 - Santec, a leading manufacturer of innovative lasers and optical components for fiber-optic telecommunications, sensing, medical and metrology markets announces that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted 510(k) clearance to market the ARGOS, Advanced Optical Biometer for use in intraocular lens (IOL) selection for patients with cataracts.

The ARGOS delivers advantages of high measurement success rates, speed and accuracy to measure 9-essential parameters for IOL selection. The values acquired in less than 1-sec are: Axial Length, Corneal Thickness, Anterior Chamber Depth, Lens Thickness, Pupil Size, Corneal Diameter, K-values (K1, K2), Toric Angle. ARGOS provides a unique real-time 2D image of the length of the eye from cornea to retina during alignment for increased confidence in the biometric measurement.

In clinical trials the ARGOS has demonstrated high performance in accuracy, repeatability and success rate even in dense cataracts. ARGOS utilizes the fast Swept Source Optical Coherence Tomography (SS-OCT) imaging technique to generate accurate results, thereby reducing procedure times and minimizing patient discomfort. IOL power is calculated from a choice of popular power formulas.

To sell ARGOS Santec has created the new brand 'MOVU'. The MOVU brand represents a distinct line of products aimed at clinical markets, and differentiates itself from Santec established business providing OEM components to system integrators. Changho Chong PhD, who leads the MOVU team based in Santa Clara CA, commented 'The FDA approval to market the ARGOS biometer is a major milestone in our goal to bring the advantages of the SS-OCT imaging technique to the ophthalmic clinician.'
