Bundesplatz 1 and Kaiserhaus: SNB buildings in Berne undergoing renovation and alteration work

The renovation and alteration work on the Swiss National Bank's (SNB) main building in Berne, which has been ongoing since February 2015, will be completed by the end of 2018. As of that time, the building will be ready for use again.

As part of the overall renovation and alteration project, work will then begin on the Kaiserhaus buildings (Marktgasse 37-41 and Amthausgasse 22-26) as well as the Kaiserhaus arcade (Kaiserhauspassage), which also belong to the SNB.

The rental premises on the ground floor of the Kaiserhaus will be completely vacated by the end of March 2018. Construction work will already commence at the end of 2017. The most substantial building work will be concentrated on the Kaiserhauspassage and the inner courtyard on the ground floor, as well as on the first floor and the first basement level. The Kaiserhaus is planned to be ready for use again at the end of 2021.

With respect to the future use of the rental premises in the Kaiserhaus, a team of experts engaged by the SNB has developed an attractive, lively concept involving architecture and art, gastronomy and retail business, as well as special events.

The alterations to the Kaiserhaus aim to enhance its architectural and design features, while taking into account the preservation of this historical landmarked monument and the appreciation of its particular cultural value. The renovated buildings and their innovative utilisation should serve to create a public space of notable quality.
