Sepura's STP8X Intrinsically Safe TETRA hand-portable radio has achieved IEC 60945 certification for maritime navigation and radio communication equipment and systems.

The radio, along with the STP8X Advanced RSM, passed a suite of rigorous tests - proving resistant to thermal shock, vibration, oil and corrosion, emissions and intensive solar radiation - certifying its consistent performance in the harsh marine environment.

The STP8X already complies with the highly demanding IECEx/ATEX standard version 6, for which the radio was baked for 28 days at 85°C and 90% humidity, then frozen at -30°C for 24 hours before being impact tested and drop tested. It was then driven over by a 1.85 tonne Land Rover and submerged to a depth of 1m for 30 minutes.

Mark Barnby, Sepura's Head of Product Management for Devices, commented:

"We are delighted that the STP8X - one of the toughest radios on Earth - has now added the onerous maritime IEC60945 certification to its growing suite of approvals.

"This new maritime certification - unique within TETRA - will now allow marine operators to benefit from that unparalleled robustness, as well as the STP8X's crisp, clear audio - no matter how tough the operational environment."
