Background and issues
In the logistics industry, there is a need to improve the working environment, such as reducing the labor burden of truck drivers, against the backdrop of a labor shortage due to a declining working population and a transportation capacity shortage in 20303.
Normally, during loading operations, truck drivers and loading workers instantly check the size, shape, and weight of the cargo, as well as the information written in the notes section of the invoice and the condition of the packaging materials, and handle the cargo appropriately. You need to be very careful, such as loading heavy items at the bottom, and checking the notes section for items that are light and likely to contain fragile items, and loading them towards the front.
Sagawa Express has been considering introducing loading robots for some time in order to cope with future labor and transportation shortages, but this was a major challenge as it was difficult to replace manual labor to maintain transportation quality. .
This initiative
This project will be undertaken by SG Holdings and Sagawa Express, which have the background and issues mentioned above, and will utilize the technology of Dexterity, which has a track record of introducing robots in the US logistics industry. We are working together with our partner Sumitomo Corporation. Dexterity will develop a robot suitable for Sagawa Express' loading site, and the four companies will jointly conduct a seamless demonstration experiment that leverages Sumitomo Corporation's comprehensive strengths.
This new loading robot is equipped with advanced AI technology based on Dexterity's robot technology cultivated in the US logistics industry, and is trained to learn Sagawa Express' logistics operations, aiming to achieve the transportation quality that Sagawa Express seeks. Masu. This is the first attempt in the logistics industry in Japan to develop a robot that can optimally load cargo inside trucks as an alternative to manual labor.
